Along with the NAPALM AD 12", I've been jamming this the most out of all my new acquisitions. For those who don't know, VONBRIGDI is a great Icelandic post-punk band from the early 80s. They only released one LP and one 7" EP back then, had one unreleased session from 1982, and were featured on a few compilations. This 12" compiles 7 tracks in total, pulled from sources other than their 2 official vinyl releases, and it's all really raw and strong stuff. Rather than listing comparisons I would rather just urge everyone to not think and just download. This is undoubtedly some of the coolest punk from the time period.

MUSTA ROMANSSI - EP
So few posts lately, I know...low on steam for the blog. But since I'm feeling too tired to go out to see Funeral Cone play an Oakland basement tonight, I'm going to share this interesting Finnish EP with you. I've been hearing a trend of bands from Finland lately that are hardcore, but slip in a KILLING JOKE-esque or dark post-punk song in here and there - namely the awesome MAAILMANLOPPU, but the other day at MRR both the new RIISTETYT and VIVISEKTIO singles had such style represented. Turns out that bands were doing this in the 80s (off the top of my head KAAOS and APPENDIX) and then here's this sole release form MUSTA ROMANSSI. The EP kicks off with dark and droning "Argentiina," before launching into a series of thrashing hardcore tunes. I personally enjoy the first track the most, as much of the other material seems to borrow a little too much from thrash metal. "The Aim OF Religion" even employs the low pitch-shifter on the vocals to add a slightly more evil dynamic. Cheesy? Yeah, but obscure and interesting enough to be on a music blog. And I've almost forgotten the most important aspect of this EP: the cover art! Need more hair + makeup like this in hardcore.

SCREAMING DEAD - Night Creatures 12"
Following a roster of rock solid Oi/punk releases, the No Future label served up this moody and haunting 12" by Cheltenham's SCREAMING DEAD. No doubt the title track is the one that really stands out the most on here, but the whole EP is worth a spin. I usually can't hang too long with a band singing "horror punk" themes 'cause it's just so damn gimmicky and corny, but sometimes I can turn my brain off (typically aided with a bunch of alcohol) and let the tunes go straight to my feet (sort of the same way I enjoy 80s new wave/pop music).

PLEASURE LEFTISTS - Cleveland, Ohio U$A
So many copycats out there these days...but there are those diamonds in the rough, and when it comes to the goth/dark post-punk revival thing going on these days, PLEASURE LEFTISTS are leading the pack with their carefully chosen sounds and incredible song arrangements. Great and memorable singer to top it off. Members played in 9 SHOCKS TERROR (!), but expect nothing of the sort. See 'em on the West coast in September!
Check out their 12" HERE!

Σάρκα – Εσωτερικότητα Στο Άγριο Έξω 12"
I'm back! Had a blast playing shows from Tijuana all the way up to Vancouver. All around success aside from the stubborn border pigs who tried to keep us out of Canada, but to no avail. Fuck the pigs, up the punx...
So, with my return I bring you a gem from the southernmost Greek island of Crete. SARKA formed in Heraklion in '89 and to this day was one of the only punk-ish bands from the island. I was given this 12" as a gift by my gracious host Nikolas at the end of my 3-day stay in Heraklion last year. He explained to me that a box of these turned up a couple years ago (it was released in 1993), mostly without covers, and that he had managed to track down a band member to get permission to help distribute them. The 12" is comprised of six hypnotizing and dark punk songs with vocals of the melancholic and desperate variety, memorizing basslines, and noise-rock styled guitars filling in all the empty space. A truly unique punk record from a truly isolated place. If you ever get a chance to visit Crete, I suggest spending a couple days in the old and seemingly lawless towns of Heraklion and Hania, and renting a car or motorbike to travel south though small villages and find free camping on the beaches, far from the touristic-beaten path. Oh and Nikolas, I know you prefer to remain off the radar, but I never got to thank you and would love to hear from you....

FIFTH COLUMN - All-time Queen Of The World LP
Don't have much info on this band, and don't feel like doing a lot of researching right now - but all you need to know is that this is a rare and amazing post-punk record by seemingly awesome women from Canada.

PYLON - Cool/Dub
I was skimming the dates under the "labels" list over on the right hand side of my blog there, and noticed that there were a few years missing from the list. So I selected today's post with the sole purpose of creating a "1979" label. Pretty neurotic huh?
Ok, it's not the only reason. A better reason would be that the debut single from this Athens (Georgia, not Greece) post punk band is infectious and amazing! "Dub" is a great repetitive but swelling and angular answer to GANG OF FOUR, and the like. The flip is the more appealing track to me, and it's made many of my mix tapes in past years. Featuring some similar characteristics as the A side, "Cool" further incorporates the classic punk (well, rock or pop too I guess...but this is a punk blog) "verse-chorus-verse-chorus" structure, and highly memorable and catchy one's at that. Such a strong post punk classic from such an odd location. From the same scene as the B-52's!

KALASHNIKOV - Sub Version LP
After an incredible and now highly sought after EP, Denmark's KALASHNIKOV dropped this astonishing LP of melodic post punk. This LP covers the full spectrum of the genera; an impressive representation of the gradation of the many styles that can be described as "post punk." And most importantly, it's fucking fun! Palpitating rhythms - from angular to straight and fast, thick and punchy bass lines, ear-catching guitar leads, and captivating and melodic female vocals. "Skinnende Stål" is my pick of the bunch - familiar in melody, but manifested only in a way that KALASHNIKOV could do it - an amazing song! Rare LP, and mandatory for fans of punk, and post punk alike.

SIOUXSIE ?
The other day my boss informed us that there was a stack of vinyl and a box of tapes up for grabs upstairs (which is really random, considering we make silicon sex toys). But we have an extremely laid back work environment, so over the years as people have come and gone, the place has accumulated a lot of people's random personal things. This particular stash seemed to contain mostly LP's rescued from the curbside (though I did snag some ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN LP's, a cool Goth LP from Oakland called FADE TO BLACK, and a few common 80's new wave pop gems), and a box of cassettes. I took some cassettes that seemed to be recordings from a radio station - sturdy old maxell tapes, perfect for recording over - and then this mysterious one marked "Siouxie?" Now, it doesn't come up in conversation as often as Eastern Euro punk or Norwegian hardcore, but I'm a huge SIOUXSIE & THE BANSHEES fan. Not like in an obsessive "collect everything and know every bit of Siouxsie trivia" kind of way...I just really love their music. A lot. And I've noted that there are so many cool alternate recordings and special sessions of SATB stuff out there, so I grabbed this hoping it would contain something like that...and I was in luck. I got a pen and paper and started listening, jotting down the names of the songs I recognized (it opens with my FAVORITE song), and checking the Discogs database for a match, and it looks like the recording is from a rare bootleg double live LP called "All Creatures Great And Small," but it's recorded onto the tape in reverse order - starting with side D, then C, then B, and then A. The recording is from St. James Church London, April 10th 1985 and is pretty decent quality, though it's a taped version of a bootlegged live record, so keep that in mind. Now, if you dig SATB as much as I do, you NEED to get this because there are a few songs that I had never heard before, and some searches lead me to believe that they haven't been released ANYWHERE else! And they're goooooood songs. They are called "Dance For Me," "Take Me Back," "Drink the Water," and "The Sound." Also there are a couple teasers on the tracklist that first appeared to be unreleased, but are just later released songs disguised with different names: "Judgement Day" is "The Sweetest Chill," and "Herald In the Rain" is "Cannons." 19 tracks total. I could go on about how incredible her voice was (it's actually kind of pitchy on this particular recording), how pumped I get about the guitar lines, how beautifully all the layers of melody interplay with each other in their songs, or how my jaw drops watching Budgie hit the drums on old live footage, but you already know how great SIOUXSIE & THE BANSHEES were...

MY EDEN DIES - S/T EP
Here's an nice melancholic German punk EP to brood to on a Saturday morning, before the sun comes in to burn off the fog (though I confess, the sun appeared before I could finish this post). I've been listening to a lot of this kind of signature dark German punk lately - mmmm, why does this somber stuff feel so good?? MY EDEN DIES only did this one EP, as far as I can tell, and then became SERENE FALL. On these three tracks they manage to hypnotize with low and droning vocals and repetitive guitar dirges, never failing to pull me into a spellbound state. The third track, "Maria," picks up the pace while retaining the same dispirited tone, making it the standout track. File with FLIEHENDE STURME, EA 80, BOXHAMSTERS, DIE STRAFE, and the like.
Oh, and this one was plucked out of the dollar (or, euro) bin at the Zorro squat record store along with the previously posted FLIEHENDE STURME single, and a few other goodies that I may post in the future (excluding the CROSSED OUT/MAN IS THE BASTARD split).

CADAVER EM TRANSE - 7" Flexi
I know my last few posts haven't been obscure 90's/80's ex-Soviet or some other "exotic" releases, but I want this blog to encompass more than just that stuff. I promise there is no shortage of that stuff on my shelf, and will continue to unleash them from time to time. I want the contents of this blog to be a well-rounded collection of sounds that represent all of my musical tastes (though I probably won't be posting stuff like THE CURE, BATTALION OF SAINTS, or THE MISFITS, because you shouldn't have too much trouble finding it, or you already know it through and through)
For now, here's a great new dark post punk band from Brasil! I was lucky enough to receive a copy of this of this in my box at MRR a month or so ago (and surely need to thank either Pato or Matteus for this, but don't have either of your contacts!!). Housed in a spooky clear plastic xeroxed fold-over sleeve, this flexi puts Brasil on the dark-punk map! Five tense compositions, accentuated with great gloomy and scratchy guitar slashings, and amazingly awkward vocals. Equal parts UK DECAY and THE MOB. Features at least one member from the blazing Brasilian hc band SPEED KILLS. Drown in the darkness..

BERNAYS PROPAGANDA - My Personal Holiday LP
Absolutely brilliant socio-political post-punk from Skopje, Macedonia! I received their new album the other day, along with an info-sheet with their three months of euro tour dates, so I felt compelled to share their last album with you with the hope of helping turn some new ears on to them while they're on the road..
I owe my knowledge of this band to my lovely Noelle, who met them during her travels over there. "My Personal Holiday" is their second album, and is a non-stop dynamic, angular dance-a-thon. Expect infectious drumbeats, choppy and catchy bass and guitar lines, and the voice of a phenomenal frontwoman - this thing just keeps moving, as will you if you're not too cool to dance around your bedroom. I really really really wish I was in one of the European cities of their upcoming shows, because I long to see a band like this right now (tired of fake aggression!). Fun fact - one of the folks in this band was in the hardcore band F.P.O., but this is far from that - think more in the vein of GANG OF FOUR or DELTA 5, but a bit more melodic. Oh, and mostly sung in Macedonian, of course. Check out songs from their brand new album here, and check the scan I made of their tour dates at the bottom, and go see them! (and then write me and tell me how they were!)
Note to Sf/Bay Area residents - I saw a copy of this LP at Thrillhouse records for 5 bux the other day. 2 incentives: great cheap import LP, and great record store to support! Go get it!

V/A - GRAD IZOBILIJA - Yugoslavian Punk Sampler Cassette
Today I present you with a great tape-trader comp of early punk from Ex-Yugoslavia. Unappealing cover, I know, but the music is a great taste of the diverse punk/new wave movement in the 70's-80's in former Yugoslavia. Interestingly, the first thing I noticed is the absence of more well known bands like PARAF, PEKINSKA PATKA, and PANKRTI. This of course is exciting to someone like myself who wants to dig deeper and hear the lesser known stuff! Here's the rundown:
PRLJAVO KAZALISTE does 3 youthful 70's rock'n roll punk tunes // MRTVI KANAL play 3 incredible upbeat punk/postpunk jams with driving keyboard lines. Extremely dynamic! Easily the winner on this tape for me - "Oglasi" is an instant classic! // ZENEVSKI DEKRET does 3 solid mid tempo punk songs and a cover of "Chinese Rocks" // more mid-paced late 70's styled punk from ZONA RANE MASTURBACIJE // and one catchy and mysterious track from GOLA JAJA - you must check out their other astonishing demo material from the excellent Degenerik blog here! // a couple softer, but catchy and crafty punk tunes from ZABRANENO PUSENJE (NOTE: "Stanje Soka" has a painful stint of skipping halfway through the track, presumably because the material was dubbed from a heavily partied CD) // one cool post-punk track and one scorcher by PROBLEMI, the second track being one of the best on the tape // two interesting and weird post punk/wave tracks by BELINSKI ZID // GROUPA 92 do two great punk songs nuanced with flourishing keyboard lines, much like THE STRANGLERS! Another standout band on the comp. // SVE PO SPISKU does 2 catchy RAMONES-ey punk jams // N.B.G with 3 quick-paced punk ragers with memorable choruses, regardless of your grasp of the language // and last but not least, GOBLINI from Serbia plays 3 tracks of melodic and poppy punk with a great driving quality. They also sound like they maybe came a bit later, judging by the recording and style...but who knows.
I should also note that I totally fucked up when I ripped this cassette and accidentally started with side B, and am not knowledgeable enough with Audacity to fix this - so the files are sequenced as such. Doesn't really matter, right?

V/A - Graffiti LP
A very awesome and obscure gem for y'all today (I'm originally from Texas, so I say y'all a lot). This is the first comp from the first wave of rock/punk/new wave shit from Uruguay from 1985 on the label Orfeo. I was after this one for a long time and finally tracked it down for a fair price a month or so ago, and boy is it a fucking party! Every second of this piece of plastic could get the punks dancing on DJ night.
It kicks off with a fairly tame, but heavy wave-pop song by ZERO - but their song later on side B, "Soy Escorpion," is clearly the better jam. On to LOS TRAIDORES, who offer a couple great melodic punk songs, clearly influenced by a mix of RAMONES, CURE, and THE POLICE. I believe they are probably the best known band on here, and their Montevideo Agoniza LP is an essential, and sadly rare piece of South American punk perfection. NEOH 23 electrifies us with one quick cold jolter, and one smoother new wave song. LOS ESTOMAGOS were supposedly Uruguay's most prized post punk band, which is clearly evident on their angular and upbeat track, "Jugaste Sucio" - but then they strip it down to a catchy, straight '77 punk jam on side B with "Campalache." Then -- oh my god -- ADN steals this comp with my new favorite song to dance/ride my bike to on repeat. I MUST have their LP - if anyone has any leads or info, or even a fucking download of this thing, I'll be your best friend! LOS TONTOS only offers up one track of their nice, sparkly melodic punk. Every song on this compilation is catchy and fun, and you'll be hard pressed to find another place to download it anywhere else, so what are you waiting for?
AUSSCHWITSS - Απειλή / Χαμένο Κορμί EP
Recently reissued by ειρκτή, AUSSCHWITSS was a dark synthy post punk band from Greece. According to the Greek punk discography feature in the new issue of Mountza zine, they formed in 1981 and released a demo in 1982, which I assume these couple tracks were culled from. Oh, and they were 15 years old! Amazing! Side A opens with a chilling keyboard/bass intro that leads into an upbeat but still brooding tune, akin to early CURE. The B side is in the same style and same pace, but maybe not quite as strong and infectious as the first track. Being a huge fan of 80's Greek punk and dark post punk, this record is a big fat tease, and keeps me wondering if there's more recorded AUSSCHWITSS stuff out there!

V/A - Jeszcze Młodsza Generacja LP
Happy Valentine's Day blog trolls. May Cupid pierce you with a love arrow and doom you to a life of the often uncontrollably agonizing roller coaster that is "being in love"
...anyway...
Somewhere along my journey of trying to obtain everything Polish-punk related, I acquired this cool post punk/new wave comp released by the Polish state-owned label Tonpress, from 1986. This thing's got good dance-ability - various dark postpunk/wave sounds on here by bands that maybe didn't release much else - the most well known being KULT, T. LOVE, and AYA R.L. But the NOWA MOWA track alone is worth tracking this comp down for to impress your friends/potential lovers on mix tapes - it's the punkest and catchiest, and could stand up next to early CURE or POLICE at their most upbeat moments. AYA R.L.'s track is also a really strong, comparable to THE CHAMELEONS - a cold, dreamy song driven by a marching snare beat and colored with tempered guitar and dramatic percussion hits. A must for cold/darkwave and postpunk fiends. And sorry, I know, my LP photos always look like crap. Computer graphics (or computers in general) are not my forte, and I think that's okay.

YEAR END TOP TEN: 2012
Sorry folks, no downloads today. But here's my 2012 top tens as is printed in the new issue of MRR...
When I first started thinking about my top ten favorite
releases of 2012, it seemed too ambitious a list for me. I have this kind of
irrational aversion to most bands/releases that get a lot of talk and hype, and
often don’t check ‘em out til like 2 years later, if ever! You can call me a
snob, but I typically look for a little more in a punk release than what other
people are saying about it. I wanna feel something, like a personal connection,
or be moved by it. Lots of records are “awesome,” or “raging,” or “killer” or
whatever. But many of those, especially the blatantly contrived ones, just get
filed and, for the most part, forgotten while we move on to the next batch of
new stuff. So, without any further ado, a list of ten releases that left a
lasting impression on me:
This is definitely the #1 standout hardcore record to me
this year. Genera-defying hardcore with the perfect balance of straightforward
raging, innovative transitions, and guitar/vocal melodies. The couple brilliant
mid-paced melodic tracks, one on each side of the disc, really just tie it all
together and make it a perfect LP. These sounds will surely stand the test of
time in the way bands like ARTICLES OF FAITH, SO MUCH HATE, or UPRIGHT CITIZENS
have.
KALTE LUST –
Somewhere Outside The Circle LP (Self Released)
Many of you probably never got to hear this French postpunk
record - quite a shame because it’s a masterpiece! They take the 80’s goth/postpunk
template and really produce something fresh and memorable with the eight dark
movements on this LP. Some tracks are spacious and ghastly, droning on and
repetitious in a delightfully rhythmic and haunting way. But tracks like the
opener, “Once Bitten Twice Shy,” or “Über Die Grenze” are beautiful postpunk
gems that will hook you at every turn. The vocalist exhibits an undeniable
Siouxsie influence, but really belts it out in her own way. Fans of all forms
of dark punk – if you haven’t heard this yet, seriously track it down!
SADICOS – Self Titled
Cassette (Silenzio Statico)
Having already enjoyed all of the members’ previous bands, I
knew I would dig this tape. However, the urgent riffs and excellent songwriting
pushed this into regular rotation on my stereo and became my favorite release (well,
currently) on the always dependable Silenzio Statico label roster.
ILEGAL - El Aire
Libre Fuera De Los Dientes Del Monstruo Tirano Y Canibal LP (La Vida Es Un Mus)
After a demo and a few great EPs, ILEGAL totally blew the
roof off with this monster. My turntable was on fire for a week straight after
obtaining this LP. I do like their previous efforts, but it seems like they
saved up all the best guitar riffs and weird hooks for this one. There are some
straight up danceable moments on here (note- I said “dance”able, not moshable),
which is pretty rare feeling for a full on blistering hardcore band to create.
Every time I play this I discover new cool shit going on. Amazing!
ANTIMOB – Demo 2012
Cassette (Εξωτικός Παροξυσμός)
I have already spilled enough ink raving about this one, so
I’ll keep this short. Intense, passionate, brutal, dramatic, and purely
excellent hardcore from Greece. You probably won’t be able to find this tape
now, but they just released an LP with the same material, but re-recorded and
yes I have heard it – and yes, it is fucking brilliant too.
REPLICA – Demo (Self
Released cassette, Flexi reissue by Radical Punks Never Die)
A perfect hardcore blend that doesn’t ever seem to get
tired. It seems like there’s been a decent buzz about this band, but it’s hard
to tell if it’s just local or if they have reached anxious ears worldwide. Well
if they haven’t, 2013 should be the year because REPLICA are always on fire.
The five songs on this tape are perfect hardcore exhibiting originality, and
with just the right touch of the classic Bay Area sound. Instant classic!
DRAPETOMANIA – EP
(Silenzio Statico, Todo Destruido)
Another killer Statico Ponk release capturing everything
that is punk. Gruff, raw, honest, and fun hardcore punk from the backyards of
LA. I cannot stress enough how inspiring that scene has been for me, and I’m
always thrilled to hear more new shit from these folks. This 7” also get my
vote for “best looking record cover/layout” of the year! I pulled a
DRAPETOMANIA t-shirt out of the free bin at the MRR compound – it was huge and white
and totally swamped me, and had a big bulldog on it. I put it on one day and my
girlfriend said it looked like a rap t-shirt (if you know me, you know this is
not how I typically dress), but I said “fuck it” and wore it all day anyway.
That’s how much this band rules!
NEON PISS – LP
(Deranged, Cut the Cord That…)
This one was a long time coming…That demo got a lot of play
on my tape deck over the last couple of years, so I welcomed this LP with
anxious open arms. Most punk bands just can’t write such captivating tunes or
develop such a unique melodic style the way NEON PISS has, and this LP is the
ultimate testament to those qualities of this Bay Area quartet. Chances are if
you live in North America or Europe and are tuned in to current punk shit, this
band has blown your face off live and you bought this record. If not, pull your
head outta your ass and get into it!
DICTADURA - Bajo La
Sombra Del Miedo LP (Stomp Records, No Thanks!! Records)
At the tail end of a long European tour, I had the privilege
of seeing this Basque band half an hour or so outside of San Sebastian. I
remember watching them and thinking that this was exactly the kind of snotty, aggressive
hardcore punk I live for.
I wondered if I would ever hear of them again, and a year and a half later I
got in touch with their vocalist, only to be informed of the new DICTADURA LP!
Pure aggressive punk with an incredible snotty vocal attack, a tight solid
rhythm section reminding me of ECONOCHRIST, and flying guitar leads in all the
right places - and a song about making punk mix tapes!! Top it off with
excellent twisted artwork, and you’ve got a “top ten-er” for sure.
ARCTIC FLOWERS – Procession 12” EP (Self Released)
I’m gonna be honest here – though I initially liked it, this
one didn’t fully grab me right away like their previous stuff did. And I am
biased because they are dear friends of mine, and Stan’s got a distinct way of
writing melodic guitar stuff that I have always really connected with – so I
guess this one’s more of a personal thing. Anyways, after recently seeing them
play again (their live energy is incredible), I spent a little more time with
this and really grew to love it. The softer, mellower moments on this record
really stand out to me because though they cut back on the aggression, it still
retains the “punkness,” if that makes any sense. “The Sleeping and the Dead,”
for example, is anything but lively or upbeat, but can’t be described as
anything but a moody punk masterpiece – much like a lot of the tough-to-label
UK anarcho punk bands from the 80’s. But let me wrap it up by declaring that it
bugs me when people simply categorize this band as “Anarcho punk,” or “Goth
punk,” or whatever safe labels people use right now, because it’s 2012 and
ARCTIC FLOWERS have been on their own path of evolution all along, and to me,
this record is far too unique to deserve to be pigeonholed like that.
There were so many reissues of great classic releases from
all over the place that I am very grateful for! Off the top of my head:
NEUROOT 12” from Havoc
Records, ALL the great Finnish reissues on Svart, INOCENTES and LIXOMANIA EPs from Nada Nada Discos, MISSBRUKRNA discography from Skrammel (finally!), QUOD MASSACRE LP from NE! Records, MARIA T-TA Y EL EMPUJON BRUTAL 7” (Sin Temores Records/ Discos Huayno Amargo/
Rock SVB Discos), ANTI… LP on ειρκτή, STRESS “Athens Burning” I & II
from B-Otherside, PARALISIS INFANTIL
1987 Demo 7” from Canal 9, CAMERA

V/A - Challenge: No Submission/Mercenary God/No Suicide LP
Here's a really cool 3-way split from Italy circa 1981, on Bootleg Records. I originally tracked this down for the NO SUBMISSION tracks after I found out they were pre- WAX HEROES, who released one of my favorite post punk/new wave EPs of all time! Luckily the rest of the material on here turned out to be stellar as well!
NO SUICIDE kicks this thing off with three offerings of infectious cold/minimal wave punk kinda stuff with female vocals in Italian. They don't seem to have any other releases as far as I can tell. MERCENARY GOD does 4 songs of 77 style KBD punk with distorted and jangly guitars, and snarling vocals in English. There's a 2004 reissue of a whole LP's worth of stuff called Burning Generation. NO SUBMISSION is the highlight on here for me, with their catchy upbeat punk and some post-punk moments. You may recognize their third track from the Killed By Death #201 D'Italia comp - it's got the same swaggering "d-beat" that the BUZZCOCKS did before DISCHARGE, hehe! All four of their tracks on here are just awesome and way ahead of their time. The vocalist/bassist has an especially unique singing style, just as is the case in his other incredible, and much darker band, WAX HEROES. Enjoy this rare Italian punk treat!

DURNOYE VLIYANIE - Nepodvizhnost Cassette
дурное влияние
I can't find much about this band on the internet written in English, which is unfortunate because this post punk/cold wave band from St. Petersburg, Russia, is really interesting, and this tape is a great listen! I got a big box of mostly eastern Euro/USSR/Balkan tapes a while back, and this was one of the shining stars of the bunch. Well, not 'shining' in a 'bright' sense - this is rather dark and desolate sounding, actually. I hear an equal amount of SISTERS OF MERCY and JOY DIVISION, while holding a tone of sheer misery throughout. DURNOYE VLIYANIE apparently existed from 1987 to 1991, but reformed a couple years ago. Дурное Влияние – Неподвижность
This recording was done in a Leningrad suburb in 1989, but this tape didn't see the light of day until 2003, and I get the feeling it's very rare. The first track is a bit more upbeat than the others, but as the following tunes slow down a bit, they certainly don't diminish in quality. Some of the guitar riffs are really innovative, and the vocals have the monotone goth quality, but not in a boring or completely contrived way, and sometimes unleash with some ear-splitting howls to keep things interesting. Perfect for those depressing rainy days...

OSCURO LUGAR - Alguien Muere EP
Still feeling gloomy and doomy here - maybe it's the cold weather, among other things...so I'm darkening things up a bit with a 7" from OSCURO LUGAR, from Colombia. Released by the wonderful Darbouka Records, this is quite a departure from anything I've heard out of Medellin. "Alguien Muere" is a relatively lo-fi track driven by a steady light drum machine, clean flanged guitar draped over the background, a harsher distorted one jabbing toward the front, and classic reverbed gothy vocals not unlike Ian Curtis or Peter Murphy, but in Español. "Paso Doble" is a creepy instrumental with a marching snare beat, a punchy synth, and textured guitar lines. "Los Males Revelan" kicks it up to hi-fi range with the drum machine, and is more synth/vocal driven. I can't find any info on this band - I don't even have a clue when this was recorded. It sounds like it could be old, but judging by the releasing patterns of the label, it's probably not. If early CURE and SISTERS OF MERCY get you moving, download this for sure.
