Music Not Noize Mixtape Vol.1

Today I'm trying something new. You all generally know what to expect from my posts at this point, so I decided to throw you a curve ball and make you listen to a tape I just made. Making mix tapes is a timeless joy and important way that punk enthusiasts have connected over the years. It's always been a favorite pass time of mine - whether making something for a friend or just for myself, a sort of DJing to an audience of one in front of my stereo and documenting the process of how one song leads to another. Other times, as is the case with today's post, I've just accumulated way too many great new records in a short period of time and feel like a mix tape is the perfect way to give them attention and take a snapshot of that point in time. This particular mix tape sticks to no specific pattern or rule except for one stack of LPs and 7"s, and my own intuition. 60 minutes of pure upping-the-punx!

GEIZZ - We Wait For Song Of Geizz EP

One of the many bizarre but ruling Japanese hardcore EP's from the 80s. A touch of metal is present, but not enough to make this more of a metal record than a punk record. "Wild Boy's" would fit nicely anywhere on any hardcore mix tape. I'm not really sure what else to say about this because I don't know shit about the band...all that matters is that it's kinda rare and it rips. Think Lemmy really lent these guys his leather jacket???

ZOLGE - Crisis My Guest LP

Bought this very interesting LP on a whim in LA a few years ago based solely on the art and Dogma label. It's kinda hard to pin down what the hell ZOLGE was aiming for here - at times it's fast punk with good energy, and then they step on the breaks for some melodic and dark glam-ish moments. Gloom and spunk interact and collide throughout keeping this one of the coolest and most unpredictable Japanese punk records I've heard from the 80's.

NO SIDE - Depressing Day EP (and fuck Thanksgiving!)

First thing's first: it's Thanksgiving, so fuck colonialism, blind tradition, Black Friday/Thursday mass-marketing capitalist distractions, and perverted mass-murder of animals for human consumption. Take a moment out of your day to try to identify all oppressors and the oppressed linked to national holidays like today. This hasn't typically been a political blog per se, but when I look out my window on holidays and notice how different the streets look than a normal day, I can't help but ponder over the whole thing and analyze its essence. As my very brilliant girlfriend would say, "I'm on one" today....

On to the noise! I mean music...This one's a tiny bit noisy in the guitar department, but it's the catchy and driving hardcore sound that hooks me on this EP. I'm assuming that NO SIDE is named after the essential LP by country-mates THE COMES, and they wear the name well. Possibly passed over by the hordes of punkers seeking out clones of the FRAMTID/CONFUSE/DISCLOSE ilk, this is a perfect Japanese hardcore EP and you should abandon whatever bullshit Thanksgiving nonsense you're doing at the moment and crank this fucker.

SIDE BURNS - All Skinhead Cons

Here's a great random find plucked out of a daunting and unorganized bin of 7"s at Rockaway Records in LA back when I lived there. I mean, look at the cover...if you were digging through hundreds on non-punk records and came across this, you would pick it up for 99 cents just to see what it's like, right? You wouldn't? Okay, I don't blame you, but I had to leave the store with something, and as it turned out, this single is fucking great. Two strong, insanely catchy, gruff and melodic Japanese punk songs. I never would have even thought of any Oi/Skin connection based on the sound - but the art and photos say it all. "Mad Chess Play The Fasten Ghost" ??? Puzzling, but soooooo good

解剖室 ‎– 髑髏 (Dissection Room EP)

Strange record here. Weird and awesome Japanese punk released by HG-Fact in 2008. It's a bit reminiscent of the old hardcore stuff on ADK back in the 80's, but with a more contemporary production. I got it from a friend who always got copies of new imported stuff at the time, and I seem to remember him saying that this is a CROW side project. I'll admit, and it may be somewhat apparent by the existing content on this blog, that I've never really ridden the Japanese hardcore/punk wave as hard as most - I like a lot of it, but just don't really listen to it as much as brilliant shit like, oh, POST REGIMENT or NEWTOWN NEUROTICS. This EP however really stood out to me and seems kind of elusive, so I urge you to give it a try! And maybe count the all the weird penises in the artwork...
